Meet the team: Xianfeng Hu (Swerim)
The H2PlasmaRed project introduces Dr. Xianfeng Hu (Swerim), part of our team with the role of project leader for pilot-scale testing in a retrofitted 5-ton-scale furnace at Swerim (WP4).
Dr. Hu and his colleagues will oversee the transformation of Swerim’s 5-ton-scale DC arc furnace into a hydrogen plasma reactor and ensure the successful execution of the pilot-scale testing campaign. This effort will advance hydrogen plasma smelting reduction technology to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7.
Dr. Hu is a senior metallurgist whose expertise spans a broad range of metallurgical technologies and processes, including hydrogen plasma smelting reduction, DRI–EAF steelmaking, high-temperature electrolysis, battery and residual material recycling, and refractory materials. He has led and/or been working on numerous pilot-scale testing projects and possesses extensive hands-on experience with pilot facilities, including electric arc furnaces (EAF), converters, Kaldo furnaces, and induction furnaces. His work bridges fundamental research and industrial application, driving innovation in sustainable and efficient metallurgical processing.
